Aaron Altherr of the Phillies became the 204th player in Major League Baseball history to hit an inside-the-park home run on Sept. 25, 2015. The right-handed hitting outfielder connected off Washington pitcher Jordan Zimmermann. Altherr hit a sinking line-drive to center where Nationals outfielder Michael Taylor dove to make the catch, but the ball skipped past him and rolled to the wall. Altherr is the first batter to hit a bases loaded inside-the-park homer since 1999 when Randy Winn did it for Tampa Bay on Oct. 3 and Tony Womack for Arizona on July 21.
The feat has been accomplished 224 times and among the 204 batters to club an inside-the-park grand slam, Honus Wagner hit the most with five, followed by Tommy Leach (4) and Joe Jackson (3). Eleven other players accomplished the feat twice, including Harry Davis, Danny Murphy, Sam Crawford, Joe Judge, Ferris Fain, Jimmy Sheckard, Rabbit Maranville, Arky Vaughan, Harry Stovey, Lave Cross and Cupid Childs.
The achievement has been reached 82 times in the American League, 97 times in the National League (since 1900) and 45 times before 1900. Since 1950, it has been matched on 41 occasions.
